How to Move On in Life: 5 Tips For Moving Past Grieving

Losing a loved one is perhaps the most difficult thing you can ever go through. No matter how many times you experience it, it never gets easier. Nor should it.

When it comes to learning how to move on in life, there are healthy steps you can take to get through your grief. Remember, however, that grief isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s an emotion that makes us human, which shows how deeply we’ve cared for a person.

Grief is an extension of love. And love is never a bad thing.

However, your loved one would not have wanted you to spend the rest of your life in misery. You must learn to move on. Here are a few tips on how to do just that.

1. Eradicate Guilt

First, and perhaps most importantly, you can’t allow guilt to be part of your grieving process. Perhaps your relationship with your loved one wasn’t what it used to be. Maybe you had a major falling out you wish you could erase.

Regardless of why you’re feeling guilty, it is a hindrance to learning how to move on in life. It can also be infectious to the point of debilitation.

Remove all blame and guilt from your life surrounding your loved one. This includes not feeling guilty for grieving. People will accept that your process is unique, and one you must go through.

2. Invest Energy Into Positive Self-Care

While managing your way through grief, there’s a difference between learning how to move on in life and attempting to become numb to the pain. It’s important to invest energy into self-care, but make sure you’re not being reckless or self-sabotaging.

Focus on yourself. Take time off of work to travel, work on your hobbies, focus on your health and fitness, or just take a week to relax and embrace the change in your life.

3. It’s Okay to Feel

Remember, everyone grieves differently, but no one is unaffected by grief. It’s natural to feel a strong surge of emotions days, weeks, and months, after your loss. It’s okay.

Allow yourself the grace to feel your way through your emotions. You don’t need to hide or bury them. Find healthy ways to let them out.

4. Ask For and Accept Support

Learning how to move on in life is much easier when you have someone to lean on. Most likely, you’ll have plenty of people offering their support. If not, reach out to family and friends.

You’re not a burden or a chore – you’re a person who’s grieving the loss of a loved one. Additionally, consider finding a grief counselor who can help you work through your feelings.

5. Grief Will Always Be There, But It Doesn’t Have to Rule Your Life

Finally, understand that you’ll always feel pain in remembrance of losing your loved one. However, learning how to move on in life means overcoming the urge to become complacent in a space of overwhelming, debilitating grief.

Don’t allow yourself to become apathetic to life. That’s the last thing your loved one would have wanted. Emotionally speaking, if you live somewhere long enough (in a state of grief), you become that place.
