Clara Leo Gatti

July 19, 1926 - February 9, 2016 Kennett Square, PA | Age 89 Loving Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Friend

Clara Leo Gatti, age 89, of Kennett Square, PA, died Tuesday February 9, 2016 at Brandywine Senior Living at Longwood in Kennett Square. She was the wife of the late John B. Gatti who died in 1997 and with whom she shared 46 years of marriage.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was a daughter of the late Gus V. and the late Mabel (Ingelido) Leo.

A graduate of Goldey-Beacom, Clara was a secretary and teacher’s aide in the Kennett School system for over 20 years. She loved working with children, particularly those who were underprivileged or dealing with personal or educational issues. If a child was in need of anything, Clara would find a way to help, even if it was just a kind word or a bit of acknowledgement.

She was a longtime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. She loved the Phillies, listening to big band and piano music, watching classic movies and, in her early years, enjoyed bowling and playing tennis. During retirement, she continued to enjoy the many wonderful friendships she made during her years at Kennett which she often said were some of the best of her life.

During her last few years, spent at Brandywine Senior Living, she was often lovingly cared for by some of the young people whose lives she touched, and was even reunited with several of her earliest friends and acquaintances. The entire team at Brandywine Senior Living and Optum Hospice became her new extended family.

Clara will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her, but her impact on our community and our youth will not soon be forgotten.

Survivors include three sons, Mark T. Gatti and his wife Karen of West Chester, John B. Gatti of Philadelphia and Michael P. Gatti and his wife Darice of Vienna VA; one daughter, Michele Gatti of Kennett Square; one brother, Gus V. Leo of Salisbury MD; one sister, Connie Bailey of Lake Forest CA; and two grandsons, Vincent and John Michael.

You are invited to visit with Clara’s family and friends from 6-8 PM Monday February 15, 2015 and 9:30-10:30 AM Tuesday February 16th at the Kuzo & Grieco Funeral Home Inc. (610-444-4116) 250 W. State St. Kennett Square, PA 19348. Her mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM Tuesday at St. Patrick Church, 212 Meredith St., Kennett Square. Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery. 1. To Mark, John, Michael, and Michele: Sorry this is so belated, but I wanted to be sure and record here what great memories I have of your dear mother (and father) from my teenage years as a Stenning Hills neighbor. Just recently moved back to Kennett after many, many years away; driving past your old Scarlett Ave. house always brings me a smile. “Mrs. Gatti” was always very kind and sweet to me, and I am truly sorry for your loss.

  5. Your mother was such a Beatiful person both in and outside. She always had a kind word for me and my family, always asking about my children and how they were doing. I remember her walking to school each day and she would always stop and talk to any of us neighbors who were out in our yards. Our sincere condolences to your family.

I my thoughts are with you as you face the loss of your mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. As with any loss, your family, friends and memories will carry you through. It will take time for you to heal, but I hope that knowing how many people care, helps to sooth your wounded heart. 7. Your mother lived a long and joyful life. She always bought a touch of class to any room she entered. A beautiful woman who was a stylish dresser. She never seemed to age. She loved her Phillies but more important she loved her children and was so very proud of all of you. Be thankful you had her this long in your lives. RIP, Clara.

  8. I am so sorry for your loss. Your Mom was such a special woman and friend to the McLaughlin family. She was a second Mom ro so many of the boys of Stenning Hills and was a steadfast fixture at their baseball games along with Mame and Gertie.

She really was such a comfort to me, PJ and Megan when we lost Gussy. We came to love her so much in those days and really cherished her wisdom and strength.

Please hold onto all of the love, memories and lessons learned from a very special lady. Thoughts and prayers from all of us.

So sorry to hear that your Mom has passed. My thoughts of Her go back to the early 60’s.

  19. All of us who knew Clara come up with the same phrases describing what she was to us – beautiful (inside and out) – loving, kind, interested always in others, enjoyable to be with over a cup or coffee or at a school function – a second mother to our son. I am so thankful for having known her, and to her children, grandchildren, and family, my sympathy for your loss.

  37. Mark, John, Michele and Michael, Your mom was one of the most wonderful, beautiful persons I ever had the joy of working with. I totally enjoy being with her in the middle school from the first day I started working till her retirement. I also enjoyed having lunch with her and our friends many times when we all retired. You have lost a great mom and me a great friend. She surely has won her reward in the Lord. We have one more soul looking out for us in heaven. I cannot make the service as I am taking care of my 90 yr old mom in up state PA. Your mom always would ask about mine. The impression your mom make on all who knew her will stay with us forever. A life WELL lived.
