Daniel P. Madonna, III

July 26, 1939 - December 29, 2017 Kennett Square, PA | Age 78 Loving Husband, Father, Brother, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Uncle and Friend

Daniel P. Madonna, III, age 78, of Kennett Square, PA, died Friday December 29, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. Born in West Chester, PA, he was a son of the late Daniel P. Madonna II and the late Ella (Dwyer) Madonna; and husband to Janice (Hostetler) Madonna, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.

Danny was a lifelong resident of Kennett Square. He and Janice owned and operated his family’s business, Madonna Custom Cleaners, then Madonna Balloons and Cakes before retiring in 1999.

During the 1970’s and 80’s, Danny volunteered in the community through his work with the Southern Chester County Rescue Association (Rescue 71), where he proudly served in the offices of Secretary, President, and Chief. Rescue 71 later merged services with the Kennett Fire Co. #1 and Danny was granted the honor of Lifetime Member distinction. He and the late Tony Talamonti co-chaired the Independence Day Celebration Committee and were instrumental in establishing fireworks displays for Kennett Square and the surrounding communities.

After retirement, Danny was known around town as the “Barber Shop Man.” He was a fixture at Burton’s Barber Shop where he helped with various tasks, distributed bubblegum to kids and contributed to lively discussions. Bob Burton and Danny met at the age of 4, and we are deeply grateful for that lifelong friendship.

As many know, Danny was the proud recipient of a heart transplant 16 ½ years ago. Known as “The Legend” at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), he participated in a trial through which he became the first patient to receive infusion treatments at home while waiting for his transplant.

Danny was loved by all who were fortunate enough to know him and he will not soon be forgotten. Quick-witted and always ready with a joke, a smile, and a wave hello, he was a friend to everyone – eager to share the accomplishments of his family, both big and small, with all he encountered. Danny was, above all other things, a family man.

In addition to his wife Janice, he is survived by sons Daniel P. Madonna IV and his wife Audrey of Exton, PA, Stephen Madonna and his wife Jana of Toughkenamon, PA; three daughters, Tina Katella and her husband Dan of Kutztown, PA, Kim Dunn and her husband Steve of West Grove, PA and Stacy Madonna of Kennett Square, PA; twelve grandchildren, Melissa, Emily, DJ, Leslie and her husband Matt, Jennifer, Jacquelyne, Joshua, Jonathan, Christopher, Kayla, David, and Matthew; one great-granddaughter, Addison; one sister, Marlene McDonough of Kennett Square, PA; one brother, Edward J. Madonna of Philadelphia, PA; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend thanks to the doctors and nurses at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the staff of Neighborhood Visiting Nurses and Neighborhood Hospice for all the loving care they have provided over the years.

You are invited to visit with Danny’s family on Thursday January 4, 2018 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. and Friday, January 5, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. at Kuzo & Grieco Funeral Home, Inc, (610-444-4116) 250 W. 1. I was so saddened to learn of Danny’s recent passing. My most sincere condolences to his family. He was a good man, and I first remember him well from my youth, going back as far when the old cleaners was still on S. Union St. He was a welcome “fixture” (in the best way) of Kennett Square, and during all the years I spent away in the military and afterwards, he was always a welcome sight whenever I made it home and seeing him he always made me feel that I was still a part of this community. Moving back here now just 3 years ago, his continued presence and ready smile made it easy to think I’d never left. Rest in eternal peace, Danny.

  2. To Mrs. Madonna and Family, I am so sorry for your loss. I have such fond memories of Mr. Madonna usually with a cloud of steam around him, diligently working when Stacey and I would rush by. He always had a smile and kind words and he always made me feel welcome. Such a great man, devoted husband and Dad, a true inspiration to those who knew him. Heaven has received another worthy Angel. My prayers are with you all.

  3. Dear Janice,
Please accept my sincere condolences for Danny’s passing. Having known Danny since 1956, I can emphatically say that he was a good person. He set a standard by his lifestyle that was a positive example for all of his peers. I would venture that he was known and loved by all in the community. If we are judged by how we treat and regard others, I have no doubt that Danny’s place in Heaven is well secured. Be assured that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

  4. Dear Janice & Extended Family,
Share with you the passing of our loving spouses. May our fondest memories linger in our minds forever. Many thanks for all you have done
to bring our class together to celebrate our school years at Kennett High School. The food was always good, the activities were
fun and we honestly enjoyed every minute being back together in Pennsylvania. Mom was a regular customer at Madonna Custom Cleaners
for years. Kept Dad neat and on his best behavior…those by gone years. Now in 2018, we can think about our sixty years of life’s many experiences and hard won accomplishments. May family and friends comfort you at this moment in time.
    My best to you,

  5. My condolences to Danny’s family for their loss. It was a honor to get to know Danny through many sittings at Burton’s. Bob, Karen, Bennie, Chuckie, Andre and others. What a crew! His absence will be big, but I’ll be thinking of him often.

  6. Dear Mrs. Madonna, Tina, Kim, Stacey, Danny and Stephen
I am so sorry to learn of the passing of your Husband and Dad.
In September 1976 I arrived in Delaware right out of college. Didn’t know much except that teaching was much tougher than I expected it to be. But I did a show, THE GOOD DOCTOR, with Tina as my student director. With her quiet confidence, she got me through it in pretty good shape. You were all there to support Drama at Saint Mark’s. CARNIVAL, THE MUSIC MAN, THE KING AND I – we had some of you up on stage – but your Mom and Dad were always in the audience. That support meant a lot to me. You had us over to your house a few times as well, and on our way home Kate and I would say, “Now THERE’s a very special family!” Seeing your Dad and your Mom there with their own quiet confidence, and strength, and easy way of smiling at you. Sending our thoughts and prayers to you all. Dave and Kate Patch

  21. Dear Janice, Tina, Kim, Stacey, Danny, and Stephen,
How shocked I was to learn of Mr. Madonna’s death! What a loss to all who knew him, but most especially a devastating loss to all of you! He was one of the nicest men I’ve ever met, always pleasant and smiling. Losing a husband and a father is always difficult, especially in a close-knit family like yours. Your Faith will help you through this terrible time in your lives, and so will your happy memories of him. In addition, you can be sure that the prayers of all your family and friends will carry you through until you can talk and laugh without tears!

Please accept my sincere condolences as well as my prayers.

    Sincerely,
    Bunny DeAscanisa

  38. Love you all so much! I am sending you prayers and wishing you all the very best at this difficult time.
Mr.Modonna was an amazing man and was such a great example of what you can achieve in life with hard work.
He may not have know it but he inspired me to carve out my own way in business.
He always had great advice to give me and Stephen, however, his ultimate words of wisdom before we left the house would always end with this…..”alright….don’t go shittin’ around”.
Best advise ever….it worked 50% of the time!
Lol….God bless you and keep you.
I’ve got a bit more shittin’ around to do….can’t wait to see you again and tell you all about It.
