E. Caroline Young

July 1, 2019 Kennett Square, PA

E. Caroline Young, passed away at her home in Kendal at Longwood Monday, July 1, 2019 just short of her 107th birthday.

She was married for 61 years to the late F. Dwight Young until his passing in 1997.

Born in 1912 in Brooklyn, NY, “Caroline” was the daughter of the late Louis Raeder and the late Elizabeth Vielbig Raeder. In 1922 the family moved to Valley Stream. In 1929, she graduated with the first graduating class of the Valley Stream Central High School District and started working there as a clerk. She stopped to raise her family of four and resumed as a secretary in 1960.

In 1935 she married F. Dwight Young. He started teaching in the VSCHS and they raised their family in Valley Stream. Caroline was active as a den mother for a Boy Scout Cub Pack that they started for their first son, and then as a Girl Scout Leader for each of her daughters. She was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Church and the Valley Stream community and they lived there until they moved to Kendal in 1988.

After traveling around the United States they made trips abroad and after retirement spent part of each winter in Siesta Key, FL.

For years, Caroline carried a bag with her current project and knitted or crocheted a bedspread for each of her children and an afghan for each of her fifteen grandchildren and three sisters. At Kendal she began weaving and quilting.

She loved to collect and tell jokes and amazed everyone with her ability to remember them right up to the end.

Her favorite interest was always her family, immediate and extended. She delighted in each one’s accomplishments and attended many events of celebration.

Caroline is survived by three of her children, Frank and his wife Carol, Mary and her husband Michael, and Paul and his wife Debbie; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-four great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her daughter, Phyllis, her brother Louis, and her sisters Phyl, Marion and Martha.

Her Viewing will take place on Friday, July 12, 2019 from 5:00 to 8:00PM at Kuzo Funeral Home, 250 West State Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348. Her Funeral Mass will take place the following day at 11:00AM on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at St. Cornelius Parish, 160 Ridge Rd, Chadds Ford, PA 19317. Interment will be held privately with family.
