Nicholas A. La Para

October 3, 2019 Kennett Square, PA Cherished Artist, Poet, Husband, Brother and Friend

Nicholas A. La Para, age 81, of Kennett Square, PA, died Thursday, October 3, 2019 at his home in Crosslands. He was the husband of Cynthia La Para, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage.

Born in Newark, NJ, and raised in Belleville, NJ, he was the son of the late Anthony La Para and the late Josephine Tortoriello La Para.

Nicholas graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Lehigh University. He continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh, earning Master’s and Doctor’s degrees in Philosophy. He taught philosophy at Lehigh University for 13 years. He then switched professions, receiving a Master’s degree in Operations Research from Lehigh University and went on to work as an Operations Research Analyst, first at Air Products in Allentown, PA, and then at the DuPont Company in Newark, DE.

Nicholas and Cynthia built a home and moved to Kennett Square in 1985, where he became a member of Kennett Friends Meeting. His interest in counseling led him to become a social services worker in several skilled nursing units in Wilmington, DE.

Nicholas had wide-ranging interests: astronomy; meditation; yoga; Tai Chi; writing poetry, fiction and songs. His life-long interest was in fine art, expressing himself in a variety of media, settling finally with pastels. He also used his art in a humorous way, developing many single-panel cartoons about astronomy and senior life.

In 2010, Nicholas and Cynthia moved to the Crosslands Community in Kennett Square, PA, where he was able to pursue all facets of his art and develop as a poet.

Nicholas is survived by his wife Cynthia, as well as his brother Christopher, Christopher’s wife Nona and nine nieces and nephews.

You are invited to attend a Memorial Service on 2 pm on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at the Crosslands Community, 1660 E. Street Road, Kennett Square, PA.

  1. So sorry. Nick’s cousin lived near me in Jersey and died two weeks ago. Nick was leader in our class.

  2. This is indeed a loss. I have many fond memories of Nicholas. As members of The Chester County Astronomical Society we spent many evenings under the stars together. His contributions to our newsletter in the form of his cartoons were always something I looked forward to.
Thank you, Nicholas, for your depth of knowledge, your enthusiasm and sense of humour. You will be missed.

  3. My condolences to family and friends on our loss. When I first met Nicholas through my wife Riva, I felt a kinship with him. After reading his obituary, I now know why! Adios, mi amigo.
