January 27, 1936 - February 22, 2020 West Grove, PA | Age 84 "Joe"

Joseph Andrew Lewis, Sr. of West Grove, PA, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Saturday, February 22, 2020. He was the husband of Louise Crampton Lewis for over 60 years.

He was born on January 27, 1936, the son of James and Violet Lewis.

In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by two daughters, Jody Graver (Denard) and Deborah Lewis (John); his three grandchildren, Jerrell Graver, Jorden Graver and Joseph Lewis; two brothers, Charles Lewis and David Lewis.

Joe graduated from Avon Grove High School in 1955 where he excelled in soccer, basketball, baseball and track. He is responsible for starting the Lewis track legacy at Avon Grove. After high school, he attended Winston Salem State followed by two years of service in the US Army and 3 years in the US Army Reserves. He was honored by the Kennett Old Timers Baseball Association for his contributions.

Joe retired from General Motors after 30 years of service. He went on to retire from the Chester County Prison and Lincoln University. Prior to his illness he worked for DuVall’s Bus Company as a school van driver. In addition to his full-time jobs, Joe worked numerous secondary jobs over his life time; constable, owner of his own janitorial business and security guard to name a few.

Joe was a hardworking man who was adored by his family. He was always true to himself and would give you the shirt off his back if need be. He enjoyed sports and always rooted for the underdog. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and on occasion, the casino.

Joe was predeceased by his parents; his son, Joseph Lewis, Jr.; his brother, Richard Lewis; and his sister, Barbara Lewis Clark.

You are invited to visit with Joe’s family and friends on Saturday, February 29, 2020 from 9:00AM to 10:30AM at Kuzo Funeral Home, 250 W. State Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348. Services will begin at 10:30AM. Interment will take place at Union Hill Cemetery.

The family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Season’s Hospice, 220 Continental Drive, Suite 407, Newark, DE 19713.
