Shirley (Bahel) Brittingham Decker

Shirley (Bahel) Brittingham Decker, 84, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 15, 2020 at Twin Pines Health Care in West Grove, PA, surrounded by her oldest daughter and son.

Shirley was the daughter of the late William and Alva Bahel.

In her early years, Shirley worked for ACA Mushrooms in Kennett Square. She was an active member of the Avondale Fire Company as part of the ambulance squad and Ladies Auxiliary. She retired from Avon Fuel in Avondale, PA.

Shirley and Jim loved to travel. She was a doll collector and enjoyed crafting with MaryAnn and the residents of Twin Pines. She was well known for her signature recipes and loved cooking in her free time. As a 1954 graduate of Kennett High School, Shirley regularly attended the annual reunion socials.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Decker, Sr.; former husband, Hilborn Brittingham, Jr.; brother, Robert Bahel; and her son, Jeffrey A. Brittingham.

Shirley is survived by her brother, Richard (Donna) Bahel of Wilmington, DE; her children, MaryAnn (Dan) Peters of Kennett Square, PA, Hilborn “Gus” Brittingham III (Pam) of Avondale, PA, Michael (Sheila) Brittingham of McMinnville, OR, Patti (Albert) Schrack of Delaware City, DE, Debbie (Claude) Chamberlain of Evanston, WY and Andrew (Brenda) Brittingham of Tuscumbia, AL and daughter in law, Diane Brittingham of Avondale, PA; her two step sons, James (Pam) Decker, Jr. of West Grove, PA and Michael (Beth) Decker of Landenberg, PA. Shirley will be dearly missed by her many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Due to the pandemic, services for Shirley will be held privately with family.

  1. Mom Brittingham im still in shock about Jeff. I spent many days at her crazy household. I dont know how she did it. I see now she was one strong woman that didn’t let anyone stop her. She was awesome as long as we didn’t get caught and if you did I know your butt was sore the next day. Your we’re an awesome mom and my second mom. Rest in peace Mom Brittingham you will never be forgotten. Love to my second family as I know this is a very hard loss.

  4. I worked with Shirley on many breakfasts and fund raisers, always had fun.
    She will be missed.
    I had spoken with her several times after she moved into Twin Pines.
    We would talk about those times.
    She was one of a kind,
    I will miss her.

  6. My heart is truly broken, MomMom, I am so glad we maintained the relationship that we had. I will miss your hugs, your kisses, starting trouble at Twin Pines, I will miss our phone calls and facetimes, most of all I just miss you. I am forever greatful your suffering is over. I know you and Uncle Jeff are just raising the heavens!! This is not good bye, its I’ll see you in heaven….I love you MomMom. RIP

  9. I spent a lot of time at Brittinghams’ as a kid. I have no idea how she maintained crowd control except we were probably afraid she would beat our butt even if we weren’t her kid. I have great respect for her. Sending my sympathy to the family.

  21. It brings me great solace to know that Shirley’s suffering has ended and she is reunited with her son. It’s highly debatable if they are behaving themselves. We miss you both. Rest In Peace. Until we meet again.
