Judith Laleike

March 20, 1935 - August 3, 2020 Kennett Square, PA | Age 85

Judy LaLeike (nee Johnson) died unexpectedly in Kennett Square, PA, on August 3rd, 2020 at the age of 85.

Judy is survived by her sons, David LaLeike of West Chester, PA, (Elizabeth Farcht) and Mark LaLeike of Strafford PA, (Joan LaLeike.) She is also survived by two granddaughters, Miyoki LaLeike and Greta LaLeike. She is survived by her brother, Bruce Johnson, of Oklahoma City, OK. She is preceded in death by her husband, Philip Denys LaLeike, and her parents Harry Sage Johnson and Marie H. (Maschmeyer) Johnson.

Judy was born in Milwaukee, WI in 1935. She attended high school in Milwaukee and graduated from University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, where she and Phil (of Stoughton) met and were married in Milwaukee in 1956.

Judy had many interests and passions that she pursued as she raised her sons and family. She lived on both coasts (Massachusetts and California) and was partial to her homes in the Midwest (Arlington Heights, St. Charles, Lake Forest and Fond du Lac) — and especially the Gilbert Lake cottage. She was glad to be near her sons and their families since 2003 when she and Phil relocated from Gray’s Lake, WI.

Judy will be remembered for her quick wit and sometimes sardonic tone. Her interests included:

– Water sports – was a swim instructor in college and set up canoeing, sailing and sunning at Gilbert Lake.
– Antiques – was a selective collector of 19th and 20th century American furniture and household items
– Crafts – was a dedicated quilter, and most recently was involved in traditional rug hooking as a member of the Brandywine Rug Hooking Guild
– Painting – started in oils and for the last 10 years focused on watercolors with Brandywine Valley landscape subjects

Additionally, Judy enjoyed reading, cooking and gardening. She looked forward to Christmas and celebrated with her decorations, cookie making and dinners with her family.

A private memorial service will be held for family and friends.

  1. I am so sorry for your loss. It was my privilege to know Judy. I sat next to her the first time she came to Brandywine Rug Hooking Guild so many years ago. She made an impression immediately although I wasn’t sure I would see her again. She was working on a chair pad. She said she wasn’t sure she would stick with it, she’d have to see how it went with her first project and then decide. Judy kept coming back. Thank goodness because Judy was good at it, designing and color planning all her rugs. It was always a pleasure to see Judy and listen to her wise and witty stories. She will be greatly missed.

  2. I was fortunate to get to know Judy as a member of the Brandywine Rug Hooking Guild. She was so talented, drawing her own designs, and using great colors to interpret the design. I enjoyed her quiet sense of humor. She was very modest about her achievements. I hope your family is blessed with great memories of Judy. I know I am.
