HERBERT THOMAS STEEL, age 77, of Kennett Square, PA, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at the Chester County Hospital. He was the husband of Barbara Newell Steel, with whom he shared 50 years of marriage.

Born in West Grove PA, he was the son of the late Herbert A. Steel and the late Margaret Mary King Steel.

He was a maintenance worker at the Friends Home in Kennett Square PA for 25 years, retiring in 2014. Prior to that, he had his own construction business.

Herb was a lifetime member of the Kennett Square Fire Company, where he served as a Fire Policeman. In his earlier years, he was a member of Boy Scout Troop 24 in Kennett Square.

He enjoyed spending his summers on the Chesapeake Bay, boating traveling, camping, driving his motorhome, going to flea markets and yard sales, and he had a love of antique cars and motorcycles.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son Gregory Thomas Steel of Kennett Square, PA; one daughter, Greta Denny and her husband Michael of Toughkenamon, PA; two grandchildren, Rebecca Denny and Austin Denny and his dog Buddy.

You may visit with his family and friends from 3:00 to 5:00 on Thursday afternoon, May 5, 2022, at the Kuzo Funeral Home, 250 West State Street, Kennett Square, PA. His Funeral service will follow at 5:00. Burial will be held privately.

  3. My sincere condolences on the loss of a classmate, fellow Troop 24 Scout, and your husband, father, grandfather and friend to many in Kennett Square and beyond. Herb, it sounds like you had the life you dreamed of in high school and on Scouting adventures around Chester County and on the Chesapeake. . May God bless and keep you while those of us who knew you remember your kindnesses and support, happiness and friendship over the past 77 years.

  6. Herb but was a very fine man… I worked with him at troop 24 for the Boy Scout unit and Kennett. He participated in all of activities and contributed greatly to the organization and to the experience of the boys… he went above and beyond what was necessary and most beautifully lived up to the Scout law’s and the Scout Oath. He was just great and will be missed

I’m lost for words and have too many memories to actually write here but I will say a couple memories he was like a second dad and family to me whenever I needed something he was there even his son when I needed information about my vehicle he was there to fix it lend a hand give a ride give a roof over the head or a meal lots good memories with the family down at the bay every summer working on vehicles helping around the house worked with his son he will be very missed … I will miss you pops
    To the steel family your dad and grandfather and my dad were very close friends and when I met Gregory AKA tiny we became very close friends and I became part of your guys’ family I will miss him dearly and I will always remember all the memories that I had with you guys rest in peace pop’s till we meet again..
