Audrey Rose (Shorter) Kenes

Audrey Kenes, 86, of Oxford, Pennsylvania, passed away on June 27, 2025. She was the mother of eight, grandmother and  great-grandmother to many, and a woman who did things her own way.

She was predeceased by her husband, Barry Lee Kenes (2019); her parents, A. Marjorie (1974) and Leonard S. Shorter (1982); and all of her siblings—a generation that knew how to make do, speak plainly, and keep moving. Audrey was no exception.

She enjoyed crafts, especially sewing and crocheting, and was a Barbra Streisand fan long before it was trendy. She loved shopping—almost to a professional degree—and would laugh about it being “dysfunctional,” though she rarely left a store empty-handed. A beach day, a bargain, or a new project could brighten her mood instantly.

Audrey was not overly sentimental, but she cared deeply, especially for family. She loved her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ—always striving to learn more and share her understanding. She had a way of sneaking learning into everyday life—like teaching math through song and dance when nothing else stuck and providing Mom’s Thought for the Day.

She had a few non-negotiables: coffee or tea (depending on the time of day), her Isotoner slippers, Court TV or a true crime show, and a heater vent to sit by—especially in York, where she would park herself to watch Hee Haw and Lawernce Welk on a Saturday night.

Audrey was stronger than she looked, and she didn’t mind reminding you—sometimes with a firm grip on your hair to make her point. She didn’t sugarcoat things, and she wasn’t the type to fuss, but she showed up when it mattered.

She leaves behind a large blended family (8 children, 31 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren,  4 great, great grandchildren); plenty of stories, a legacy of Jesus, grit, determination, and realness. She will be missed—but we are pretty sure she would want us to get over it, get some coffee, and maybe hit a sale.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2025 from 4:00PM to 5:00PM at Bible Evangelical Church of Oxford, 866 5th Street, Oxford, PA 19363. Services will begin at 5:00PM. Interment will take place at 12:00PM on Friday, July 11, 2025 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 198 Old York Rd, New Cumberland, PA 17070. 

In lieu of flowers, Audrey's family requests donations be made to the Bible Evangelical Church of Oxford, 866 5th Street, Oxford, PA 19363.
