David Scharr Obituary

David Daniel Scharr, 68, of Kennett Square, PA, and a resident of Friends Home in Kennett, passed away peacefully on July 7th with his siblings by his side.

David was born 1956 in Ridley Park, PA to parents Betty Jane (Maxwell) and Jean Maure Scharr. David grew up in Chadds Ford, PA. He is survived by his four siblings, seven nieces and nephews, and five great nieces and nephews. His surviving family includes siblings: Sandra Scharr Palombo (Richard) of Marco Island, FL, Stephen Scharr (Elizabeth) of Elkton, MD, Peter Scharr (Marjory) of Chadds Ford, PA, and Paul Scharr (Lisa) of New London, PA. David was a beloved uncle to nieces and nephews Zachary Palombo (Lori) of Seaville, NJ, Matthew Palombo (Joanne) of Fort Washington, PA, Conor Scharr of Brooklyn, NY, Dorothy Scharr (Brian) of Brooklyn, NY, Selina Scharr of Brooklyn, NY, Leanne Scharr of New York, NY, and Patrick Scharr (Caroline) of Greenville, SC, as well as great nieces and nephews Lucia, Rocco, Maxwell, Livia, and Caroline. David was predeceased by his parents, Jean and Betty Jane.

David attended St. Patrick School in Kennett and graduated from St. Mark’s High School of Wilmington, Delaware. There, he participated in cross country and track. After graduating high school, Dave completed vocational training in the food services industry. He became a valued employee for many years due to his congenial spirit, dedication and dependable attendance.

David’s family refer to him as the unofficial “mayor” of Kennett Square, as he loved spending time greeting his neighbors every day on morning walks, visiting the Kennett Library and attending the YMCA. David volunteered regularly at the senior center and loved to patronize the local restaurants and shops. Depending on the season, David would be decked out in his favorite Phillies or Eagles attire. He followed the games and players with a passion. When not turned out in sports’ gear, David was a flashy dresser known for his bold Hawaiian shirts, eccentric hats, and many walking sticks.

David was devoted to his Catholic faith and could be found in church most Sunday mornings and holy days. In addition to his volunteer contributions to his community, David was the family historian and keeper of all knowledge on Scharr and Maxwell genealogy. He loved sharing all the tales with the younger generations about their family roots. David possessed a passion for reading, American History (particularly the Revolutionary and Civil Wars), 60’s music, Western movies, and the Beach. He loved sharing his interests with his family on special trips to the Gettysburg Battlefield in PA, the Shenandoah Valley, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH, Longboat Key, FL and many visits to Ocean City, NJ.

David’s family and community was made better because of his compassion, sense of humor, and commitment to connection. He will be dearly missed by his siblings, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, as well as many friends and neighbors in the Kennett Square community.
