Edith A. Giese (nee Koch), age 77, of Avondale, PA, formerly of Philadelphia, PA, died Thursday, August 11, 2016 in Avondale, PA. She was the beloved wife of Ernest R. Giese, with whom she shared 55 years of marriage.
Born in Queens, NY, she was the daughter of the late Herman and the late Marion Koch (nee Zeidler). Edie graduated from Jamaica High School in 1957 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Albright College in 1961.
Edie devoted her professional work life to helping others. She served as Executive Director for the National Gray Panthers from 1975 to 1985, and worked for numerous other non-profit organizations, including the Metropolitan Career Center, the Philadelphia Developmental Disabilities Corporation, the Tabitha Foundation, and the First United Methodist Church of Germantown After School Program.
A longtime member of the Ridgewood Baptist Church (Queens) and the First United Methodist Church of Germantown (FUMCOG), she was a lifelong fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers. An avid birder and walker, Edie loved the Wissahickon Park in Philadelphia, Cape May NJ, and the Adirondack Mountains in upstate NY. She also enjoyed playing cards and having dinner parties with friends who shared and delighted in her spiritual intuition and secular wisdom.
Survivors in addition to her husband include her son, Ken Giese of Philadelphia; her daughter, Laura Judd and husband Christopher Judd of Avondale, PA; and three grandchildren, Maxwell, Nathan and Emily.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be on Sunday, September 18, at 1:30 pm at the First United Methodist Church of Germantown (6001 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19144). A reception will follow the service at the church.
