Edward Sigda Obituary

Edward Joseph Sigda, age 97 of West Grove, died peacefully on Saturday, August 23, 2025 with family at his home in Jenners Pond.

He married Barbara Sullivan on December 28, 1957, and for nearly 68 years, they were not only devoted partners but also the truest of friends, their love and closeness growing deeper with each passing year.

Ed was born in Chester PA to Regina Marian Krasza and John Michael Sigda in 1927. After graduating from Chester High School in 1945, he joined the Army of the United States on January 28,1946 at the end of World War II and was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal and World War II Victory Medal. After his service ended in June of 1947, Ed took advantage of the GI Bill to earn a BS Education degree from Millersville State Teacher’s College.

Ed dedicated his life to the education of others. Although a challenging teacher, he was beloved by his students for his passion for teaching. He began his career at Ridley Township Junior High teaching mathematics and continued his education earning two Master’s degrees: Secondary Education from the University of Delaware and Mathematics from the University of New Hampshire, where he studied during summers. He continued to teach math at Sharon Hill High School for 22 years. After obtaining his Doctorate of Education from Temple University, Ed spent the last 15 years of his career as the Southeast Delco school district’s Director of Technology and Supervisor of Mathematics.

He lived his faith through active service at St. Madeline’s Catholic Church, proclaiming God’s Word as a lector and joyfully giving of himself in many volunteer activities, including as the announcer for the annual Parish June Fete celebration. Upon moving to New London, Ed and Barbara joined Assumption BVM in West Grove where Ed continued as a lector well into his 90s and both volunteered for numerous activities. His devotion, generosity, and love for the parish community touched countless lives and inspired all who knew him.

Ed enjoyed spending time with his family. From the annual opening day trout fishing get-togethers which often included his brother, Walt (deceased), and Walt’s family to family beach vacations in Old Orchard Beach, ME; Nag’s Head, NC and Lewes, DE, Ed spent quality time with Barbara, their six children, and nine grandchildren.

He shared a lifetime of joyful moments with his beloved wife, but nothing delighted them more than dancing together. Whether jitterbugging, gliding through a waltz, or joining in a lively square dance, they moved in step with each other and with the music of Glenn Miller and other big band favorites. Their love, laughter, and shared rhythm were a constant throughout their years together.

When not dancing with Barbara, Ed enjoyed all kinds of fishing. Whether trout fishing on Octoraro Creek, bass fishing on the Brandywine, watching bobbers at Camp Ellis, Maine or surf fishing on Delaware or North Carolina beaches, he found joy and relaxation fishing and sharing those moments with family and friends.

Ed is survived by his wife, Barbara, his children and their spouses: Anne and Jim Russell of Alexandria, VA; Catherine and David Voorhees of Lewes, DE; Michael and Pamela Sigda of Alexandria, VA; Patricia and Robert Geiss of Lewes, DE; Jack and Kathleen Sigda of Warrington, PA; Edward Sigda of Milton, DE; and grandchildren: Nicole, Christopher, Marien, Matthew, John, Paige, Max, Robert, and Kaitlin. His sister Josephine Garafola also survives him, together with many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Friday, September 5, 2025 at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, 300 State Road, West Grove, PA. All are welcome to attend the viewing from 10:15AM to 11:15AM, followed by the funeral mass at 11:30AM. Interment services will be private.
