Eugene Francis Xavier Shaw, Jr. (“Gene”) of Landenberg, PA, a skilled artisan and gentle soul, died peacefully at Chester County Hospital at age 72 on October 2, 2025 from complications of silicosis and emphysema. Gene was the husband of Joan Merrick Shaw. They enjoyed a loving and supportive marriage of forty-seven years.
Gene was the son of the late Eugene F. X. Shaw and Susanne (Dougherty) Shaw. He was raised in Upper Darby, PA and was a 1971 graduate of Monsignor Bonner High School. He attended Mercyhurst College and West Chester State College (now University).
Gene had a successful career as a ceramicist with the Franklin Mint, specializing in porcelain. He was a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. In retirement, Gene and Joan made and sold pottery through a venture they named Thistle Hill.
In addition to his wife, Gene is survived by his son, Eugene Joseph Shaw (and wife Nea Banuelos) of Philadelphia, PA and his daughter Rachel Shaw of Newark, DE; siblings Kathleen Wetzel (Keith), Arthur Shaw (Patricia), Clare Donaldson (Gene), and Marie Kushnerick (Joseph), as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Eileen Dolente (Sam).
A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 11:00 am to 12:30 followed by a memorial service at 12:30pm, at Foulk Funeral Home, 200 Rose Hill Road, West Grove, PA 19390.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the SCC Emergency Medical Services (863 West Baltimore Pike, West Grove, PA 19390), who provided Gene and Joan with compassionate care in multiple transports. Please indicate “In Memory of Gene Shaw” in the memo section.
