Frank Oas Obituary

Frank Tyson Oas of West Chester passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

A man of few words and a sense of humor, Frank was 95 years old and was born in Birmingham Township when it was still part of Delaware County.  He was the seventh of thirteen children born to the late Gustav and Mary Marguerite Oas (nee Tyson).  He was predeceased by his brothers Carl, Pete, Charlie and Mickey Oas as well as his sisters Jessie Pennington, Becca Quinn, Sarah Donia, Betty Journey, Dottie Banner and Elenor Clark.

Frank was a 1947 graduate of Unionville High. In 1948 he joined the US Army, serving until his honorable discharge in 1955.  He served as Sargeant First Class in the Signal Corps during the Korean Conflict.  Upon returning to the States after his reenlistment, he predicted the weather and served as a communications officer at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. In addition to earning the respect and friendship of many, his awards included The Good Conduct Medal, The Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), and The National Defense Service Medal.

Frank spent a large portion of his life farming, and he was a proud and lifelong steward of the agriculture, beauty and history of Chester County.  Although he was a lover of all animals, Frank had a particular affinity with dogs and horses.  He was an integral part of the Brandywine Hounds for many years, and he served on numerous committees for local horse racing events and organizations.

During his professional career Frank enjoyed many long-time friendships while serving as Operations Manager at Visionary Designs, officially retiring when the company was dissolved in 2018.  Frank enjoyed countless WhirlAway Travel trips with long-time friends over the years, and some of his favorite pastimes included watching the Phillies as well as attending tailgates, polo matches and dinner parties, which he continued to do up until the last few months of his life.

Frank is survived by his former wife Josephine Cornwell Parman; children Mike Oas (Ann Grey) of Parkesburg, Betsey (John Vattelana) of West Chester, and Sue Oas of West Chester; his brother Jack Oas (Jean) of Avon Park, FL and sister Jane Teter of Parkesburg; and countless nieces and nephews.

Frank willed his body to the Humanity Gifts Registry of the State of Pennsylvania. A celebration of Frank's life will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Department of Veterans Affairs, Coatesville VA Medical Center (135), 1400 Blackhorse Hill Road, Coatesville, PA 19320.
