Guy Alchon Obituary

Guy Alchon, age 74 of Landenberg, PA, passed away on October 26, 2025, at his home.

Born 1951 in Evanston, IL, Guy was the son of the late Bernard Forbes Alchon and the late Marion Gargan Alchon and brother to the late Fred Alchon.

He attended The University of Iowa, where he earned his PhD in American History. Prior to his retirement, Guy was a Professor of Modern History at the University of Delaware.

Guy was a voracious reader with interests that spanned history, social science, literature, poetry and the arts. His library was in the thousands and he would always be seen with a book or news magazine in his hands.

He enjoyed college women’s basketball, especially the University of Iowa, following Caitlin Clark’s rise in the ranks. Win or lose, he was a devoted Hawkeye.

He was a dedicated professor, and he felt strongly that he instill in his students the ability to critically think. He challenged them to take a bigger world view and question the political and social landscape around them. He helped bring special speakers to the University of Delaware and had a heart for veterans. Guy had a special relationship with Hugh Thompson and Larry Colburn.  Hugh and Larry were heroes during the My Lai massacre saving civilians in Vietnam. Guy invited Hugh and Larry to the University of Delaware to talk about moral courage, advocating for ethical conduct during war.

Guy was particularly interested in supporting Iraq veterans and spent a lot of time in his classroom discussing the political landscape and moral injury.

Prior to retiring, he began research on Triumph, spending hours interviewing the remaining women who worked in the munitions factory in Elkton, Maryland during WWII.

An elegant and brilliant writer Guy’s every note, every word, and every sentence was perfection.

Guy adored his grandson and would spend hours looking for the perfect gifts to send, delighted by the pictures of him with his new toy or outfit. Of course, one could never have too many galoshes when you are one years old.

Guy is survived by his daughter, Lilla, his grandson, Hadley and his best friend, ex-wife Debbie Learn Alchon.
