Ira Sheets, age 82, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026, at Phoenixville Hospital. He had been residing at a VA care facility, where he received support for his health in recent months.
Born May 3, 1943, in West Jefferson, NC, Ira – affectionately known as “Chico”, a nickname he carried throughout his life – lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a deep love of sports.
He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1967, including four years of active duty and two years in the active reserves. Outside of service, Ira was an avid sports enthusiast. He had particular passion for boxing and racing and was a devoted fan of the Philadelphia Phillies. Whether watching a game, discussing stats or simply enjoying the excitement of competition, sports brought him great joy.
Ira will always be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. He always had a funny story or joke to share, bringing laughter to those around him. His positive outlook on life was an inspiration, and he faced most days with warmth and optimism.
He will be remembered for his service to country, his love of sports, and the joy he brought to family and friends.
