John Anton deVeer II age 87, of Kennett Square, PA, died Wednesday December 2, 2015 at Kendal Community in Kennett Square, PA. He was the husband of Priscilla Peirce deVeer, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was a son of the late Dr. J. Arnold and the late Margaret (Hopkins) deVeer. He was a veteran having served our country in the Navy. He was a graduate of Swarthmore College (BSEE) and had a Master degree from Harvard University in Applied Mathematics.
For most of his career John was a Sr. Engineer with IBM, specializing in computer systems design. He was the founder of many patents for computer system components. John was part of the team who designed on-board computer systems that were part of the US space program and led IBMs entry into the use of fiber optics.
John was a talented woodworker and craftsman and especially enjoyed restoring the pre-revolutionary home which he and Priscilla share for most of their married life. He and his family also enjoyed many summers in a log cabin in Ontario Canada where in addition to many other projects, he restored a wooden boat.
He enjoyed assisting his wife (a flower show judge for the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State) by designing and building displays for flower show competitions and volunteered for the club by computerizing their systems and being their webmaster.
He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the Religious Society of Friends.
Survivors include in addition to his wife Priscilla, one son, James A. deVeer II and his wife Catherine of Hanover MA; one daughter, Susan Comley deVeer and her husband W. Paul Morrison of Fairfield, PA; one brother, William Hopkins deVeer of Madison, MS; one sister, Dr. Jane deVeer Buehrer of Laguna Hills, CA; two grandchildren, John A. deVeer III and Dana Knochel and 7 nieces and nephews.
You are invited to Johns memorial meeting for worship, 2pm Saturday January 9th, 2016 at the Auditorium of Kendal at Longwood, 1109 East Baltimore Pike Kennett square, PA 19348. Interment will be held privately. Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Friends Service Committee, AFSC Development 1501 Cherry St. Philadelphia, PA 19102.
