Joseph Louis Black Jr. of West Grove, PA, passed away peacefully on his 76th birthday surrounded by his children at DHCI in Smyrna, De.
Born on February 5th,1949 in Chester, Pa., he was the eldest son of the late Leona Massey and the late Joseph Black.
While living in Boothwyn Pa., he became an Eagle scout and graduated from Chichester High School. Afterwards he enlisted in the Army and luckily was stationed in Hawaii during Vietnam. Once discharged from service, he started working at Sun Oil in Marcus Hook until his retirement. During this time, he met Joan Flynn with whom he would marry and have 5 children with. He graduated from Goldey Beacom and was a volunteer firefighter.
When he wasn’t busy with Dad duties, Joe enjoyed working, whether at work or around his several homes. Always crossing completed tasks from his “things I need to do before I die” list that never got shorter. He also enjoyed spending the day on his boat in the bay, specifically crabbing and listening to music. His favorites were Led Zepplin, Rolling Stones, Moody Blues, and Bob Marley. The thing he was most proud of was becoming Pop Pop. He went on to have 8 grandsons that he adored. Unfortunately, he didn’t get to enjoy this period of his life very long. Diagnosed with dementia, he spent what should have been his retirement years slowly fading away. Luckily, he had wonderful nurses and staff by his side every step of the way for which we will forever be grateful.
Joe was predeceased by his son, Joseph L. Black III, his wife of many years, Joan, brothers Mike and Kenny.
He is survived by his son Justin Black of Georgetown, De., daughters Kimberly O’Brien of Avondale, Pa., Cynthia Black (Mike) of Wilmington, De., Jessica Cieszynski (Chris) of Landenberg, Pa.; one sister, Karen Cassidy (Dennis) of Boothwyn, PA; one brother, Frank Black of Chester, PA; grandsons Jared, Landon, Christopher, Darrion, Chase, Jake, Luke, and Brendan, and many nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held from 11am to 12:00pm on Wednesday, February 12th at Kuzo funeral home, 250 W State St, Kennett Square, PA. 19348 followed by a funeral service at noon. Interment will be at St. Patrick’s cemetery following the service.
