Lorna Deckman Obituary

Lorna D. Deckman, 95, of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, passed away on Tuesday, October 18 at Linden Hall in Kennett Square. She was the wife of the late Roland L. Deckman.

Born 1927 in Saltillo, Pennsylvania, she was the eldest daughter of Walter Drake and Stella Nead Drake. As a child, Lorna and her family moved to Hamorton. She loved all of the animals on the farm, especially the dogs, chickens, and horses.

Lorna graduated from Kennett High School in 1945. She then became a secretary at DuPont in Wilmington. After that, she worked as secretary to the director of Longwood Gardens where she stayed until her retirement at age 55. She adored her job and loved getting dressed up for work. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Kennett Square. Reading from her mother’s Bible brought her much peace and comfort. Lorna’s greatest joy was spending time with her family and many friends, her sorority sisters and later, the Red Hat Society.

Lorna was an avid reader, absorbing anything political. She kept her mind sharp doing crossword puzzles and reading the newspaper every day from front to back.

Lorna is survived by her son, Ronald L. Deckman of Kennett Square; as well as two grandchildren Valerie L. Winter (Erik) of Landenberg, PA and Jason L. Deckman of Egg Harbor Township, NJ; and one great granddaughter. In addition to her parents, Lorna was preceded in death by her sister Arlene and her brothers, Malcolm and Duane.

There will be a private interment at Longwood Cemetery on Friday, November 4.
