Marie Coan, of Cherry Hill, New Jersey (formerly of Wallingford, Pennsylvania), died peacefully in the early morning of Saturday, January 10, 2026.
Marie was raised in South Philadelphia, the daughter of Philomena and Frank Serge, where she grew up alongside her brothers Peter, Anthony, and Joseph. She attended St. Thomas Aquinas, a place that remained meaningful throughout her life.
In 1958, Marie married George Coan. They met at a ballroom dance and were married at St. Thomas Aquinas. George preceded her in death on June 20, 2023.
As a girl, Marie spent meaningful time in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, with her aunts and uncles, whose family owned several mushroom farms, including Modern Mushrooms, a major grower in the region.
Marie was devoted to family and friendships, and she carried a warm steadiness that made people feel at ease. She shared a close and cherished friendship with Susan and Joanne. Together, the three of them called themselves the Grasshoppers. Marie also especially enjoyed time in Ocean City. Marie adored her grandchildren and spent as much time with them as she could, taking deep joy in their lives and celebrating each of them with pride and affection.
An animal lover at heart, Marie raised and bred Old English Sheepdogs, including show dogs. One became a champion named Crumpet, along with beloved dogs Poppins, Tuppy, Roy, and Truffles.
Marie is survived by her sons, Stephen Coan and his wife Lorraine, and Kevin Coan and his wife Denise; and by her grandchildren, Conner, Brooke, and Sophia. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Sandy, a niece, and many nephews, along with extended family and friends.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 24th from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 212 Meredith Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery, 460 Union Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348.
