Marlene Hylak Obituary

Marlene Elizabeth Hylak, a woman whose indomitable spirit, unwavering kindness and striking natural beauty touched the lives of many, passed away on March 16, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on September 15, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, to George Bodenchak and Bernice Doniek, Marlene's life was marked by profound resilience, faith, and a relentless devotion to spreading compassion, truth, laughter and encouragement. She truly lived each day “in the moment” with a childlike spirit and hopeful disposition that remained until the end.

Marlene attended Catholic schools in Chicago, where her remarkable aptitude for typing and piano flourished. Her talents led her to earn a teaching degree in piano, though her professional journey took her to the Santa Fe Railroad in Chicago, where she served as a typist and stenographer for almost two decades. Known for her incredible speed and precision, Marlene earned the admiration of colleagues and supervisors alike, exemplifying dedication and excellence in her craft.

Despite the incredible challenges she faced—physical, emotional and financial—Marlene never allowed adversity to diminish her compassionate heart. Following a devastating accident that left her bedridden for the last ten years of her life, Marlene demonstrated a rare and beautiful transformation, growing only kinder, more tolerant, and more loving with each passing day. Her warmth and humility made her the favorite patient of many nurses at Pocopson Home, where she spent her final years, surrounded by the unwavering love of her family who visited her daily.

A devout Catholic and daily communicant, Marlene drew strength from her faith, embracing life with gratitude and grace even in the face of suffering. Her honest spirit and straightforward encouragement were gifts she shared freely with everyone she encountered.

Marlene possessed a rare gift which will be remembered: the ability to enter deeply into the suffering of others without judgment or condescension. She never insisted on false optimism but rather accompanied those in pain with authentic understanding and encouragement. Her ability to connect with people’s suffering, to help them carry burdens she herself knew well, was a testament to her humility and profound empathy.

She would also want to be remembered for her easy, attractive and natural appearance, which she kept simple and uncomplicated. Ahead of her time in using minimal to no makeup, and hair that she cut herself and never colored, Marlene’s fashion also reflected a minimalist aesthetic long before it was popular. Likewise, she rarely wore jewelry of any kind because she found it both cumbersome and unnecessary. Her fashion choices were classic and timeless.

Marlene is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Bridget Gabrielle Hylak and Joseph Lee Hooker; her grandchildren Veronica Grace Hylak, Benjamin Lourdes Hylak, Blaise John Joseph Hooker-Hylak (offspring of Bridget and Joseph), her devoted sister and brother-in-law, Diane and John Bozek; and her ex-husband, Peter John Hylak, whom she was with for 16 years and admired deeply. She was predeceased by her first grandson, Luke John Neumann Hooker, whose death from pediatric liver cancer touched many around the world.

She will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
