Max Garland Pennington Sr., age 84, of Avondale, PA, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
Born in 1941 in Ashe County, Creston, North Carolina, Max was the son of Ambrose and Lavonne Pennington.
Following his graduation from Kennett High School in 1959, Max proudly served in the United States Army. He went on to work as a Kennett police officer and later in the automotive industry. Throughout his life, he had a heart for service and a genuine desire to help others.
Max married his high school sweetheart, Pauletta “Sissy” Pennington, and together they built a life rooted in love and family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Max had a deep appreciation for the outdoors—he loved fishing, taking long motorcycle rides, and spending time in the mountains of Lycoming County, PA. He was also a dedicated Phillies fan and rarely missed a game. Above all, he was deeply committed to his family, leaving behind a legacy that will carry on for generations.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Pauletta “Sissy” Pennington; his daughter, Roberta Melendez (Marvin Melendez); and his brother, Vance Pennington (Sara). He was preceded in death by his son, Max G. Pennington Jr., and his sisters, Rose Heart (Skeeter) and Betty Sapp (Everett).
Max leaves behind a loving legacy through his grandchildren: Stephanie Fischer (AJ), Nicole Pennington, Geoffrey Melendez (Kaitlynn), and Katlyn Melendez (Meallan). He was also blessed with great-grandchildren: Amira, Aydin, Skylar, Royan, Landon, Dane, Azalea, Benson, Juniper, and Charlotte.
Services will be private.
Arrangements by Kuzo Funeral Home of Kennett Square, PA.
