Peggy Baunchalk Obituary

Peggy Jean Dignan Baunchalk, 91, of Hockessin, Delaware, passed away peacefully on October, 31, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Born on January 21, 1934, in Jonesville NC, Peggy devoted her life to her family and strengthening the bonds of her community. She was an educator in Delaware for many years, a Eucharistic Minister at St John the Beloved, and retired from University of Delaware after a distinguished career. 

Upon retirement, Peggy moved to Fenwick Island, DE where she became very deeply involved in public service.  In 1993, she was elected to the Fenwick Island Town Council as Treasurer and went on to serve as Council President and Mayor from 1995 to 2003.  She became a highly respected and recognized leader in Sussex County and throughout the State of Delaware, working diligently to advance municipal government, environmental protection and responsible land use. 

Peggy also served as Regent for the Daughters of the American Revolution - David Hall Chapter where she dedicated many hours to preserving our nation’s heritage, promoting education, and inspiring patriotism. 

Those who knew Peggy will remember her radiant smile, her infectious laugh, and above all,  her unwavering love for her family.  Her warmth, generosity, and service to others will be cherished and remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. 

Peggy is survived by her husband of 66 years, Ronald Baunchalk; their five children,
George(Charlotte), James(Rosemary), Mark(Melanie), Deborah(Bob), Ronald(Lisa); 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband; George Joseph Dignan III, her parents; James Johnson and Lillie Johnson, and her sisters; Barbara Fischer, and Mary Nell Johnson.

Family and friends are invited to visit with Peggy’s family from 11:00am-12:00pm on Wednesday November 5, 2025 at Kuzo Funeral Home, 250 West State Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348. A memorial service will follow.  Interment will be held privately at St. Patrick Cemetery in Kennett Square.
