Richard F. Bertrando, age 89 of Avondale, PA, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at Christiana Hospital.
He was the husband of the late Edna Spencer Bertrando. The two shared 42 years of marriage prior to Edna’s passing in 1999. Rich and Edna were an active couple who enjoyed partaking in the great outdoors. They would often camp and ski together. Richard was quite talented at skiing and could easily maneuver down a black diamond trail well into his 70’s.
Born 1934 in West Chester, PA, Rich was the son of the late Angelo N. Bertrando and the late Isabel Costanzo Bertrando. As a child, Rich enjoyed the Summers he spent with his father in New England. He would help his dad, an accomplished horse trainer, by galloping the horses and ensuring they received good exercise.
Richard graduated from Kennett High School. He went on to work as a Traffic Manager for Hewlett-Packard. He also proudly served our country as an artillery soldier in the United States Army, stationed in Dachau West Germany.
Always a devout Catholic, Rich attended mass every Sunday at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother.
Once a day, you could find him at the Dunkin’ Donuts in Hockessin, where he regularly met his friends to get together and have a coffee.
Rich was a jack of all trades and could fix just about everything. Whether you needed a tailor, a welder or a plumber, Rich was who you called.
He liked hot rods and was also very knowledgeable about World War II airplanes.
Richard had a good sense of humor and always had a joke or a funny story to share. His family and friends will miss him deeply.
Richard is survived by his son, Barry Bertrando (Terri); his daughter, Marlene Doherty (Bruce); as well as three grandchildren, Danielle, Brenden and Brian. He was preceded in death by his son, Brian, and his sister, Marlene.
You are invited to visit with Richard’s family from 9:30AM to 10:30AM on Thursday, May 30, 2024 at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother, 8910 Gap Newport Pike, Avondale, PA 19311. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00AM and interment will follow mass at St. Patrick Cemetery.
