Robert E. Burtner

Robert E. Burtner, 90, of Kennett Square, PA passed away on June 1, with the love of his life, Dortha Burtner, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage, by his side.  Bob was born in 1936 in Mechanicsburg, PA to the late Calvin and Olive Burtner.

Bob graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1957 with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and went on to obtain his master’s and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from Purdue University.  While at Rose-Hulman, he was a brother in the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. 

Bob served on active duty in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1959 and was on reserve duty in the U.S. Army from 1959 until 1967 where he was promoted to Captain.  He worked for Sun Oil Company from 1963 until his retirement in 1992, where he was the Manager of the Custom Products Group and formulated Sunoco racing gasoline.  Following his retirement, Bob enjoyed playing golf, serving on the board of a credit union, and ushering for the Kennett Symphony.

Bob is survived by his wife, Dortha; his son, Andrew Burtner of Galena, OH, his son, Mark (Rachel) Burtner of Pikesville, MD, his daughter, Lynn (David) Isaman of Mount Vernon, ME; five grandchildren, Ryan (Alyssa), Nicholas (Yessica), Christopher (Kelsey), Madyson, and Conner Burtner; and three great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 12:00 p.m., at Kuzo Funeral Home, 250 West State Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Alpha Tau Omega Foundation, Gamma Gamma Chapter Scholarship Endowment, 333 North Alabama Street, Suite 240, Indianapolis, IN 46204 or to the Brandywine Valley Symphony, P.O. Box 72, Kennett Square, PA 19348.
