Robert Joseph Statz, age 79, of Kennett Square, PA died on January 2, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Karen Statz, with whom he shared 41 years of marriage.  Bob was the son of the late Joseph and Katherine Statz.  He was born in New York and lived in several states before the family moved to Baltimore, Maryland.  Bob graduated high school from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1957.  He attended American University for his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry and then the University of Maryland where he earned his Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry in 1968.

Bob retired in 2001 from a 34-year career as a research chemist at E.I. DuPont De Nemours Inc. in Wilmington, DE. He was the holder of numerous U.S. patents for his research work at DuPont and he received DuPont Marketing Excellence Awards for the discovery of Elvaloy®.  He was once featured in a corporate television advertisement discussing his inventions.  After retiring, he pursued his passion for chemistry through consulting work.

Outside of work, Bob enjoyed fishing, skiing, gardening and attending to his fish and water lily pond. Over the years he served in multiple positions at the Unionville Presbyterian Church.  Bob and Karen shared time together traveling to explore many regions of the world. They enjoyed formal dancing with several local Dance Cotillions. He was a devoted father who enjoyed snorkeling, skiing and fishing with the whole family during their annual vacations. Bob had a great sense of humor and was known for his ready supply of jokes for any occasion.

Bob is survived by his wife Karen; his son, Eric Statz of Boston, MA; his daughter, Andrea Sloan and her husband, Andy Sloan of Flagstaff, AZ; and a sister, Diane Clark of Portland, ME.
