Joseph William Ross, Sr.

November 15, 2020 "Joe"

Joseph William Ross, Sr., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, November 15, 2020. He was the husband of the late Nancy Lou Wolfe Ross, with whom he shared 40 years of marriage. Born 1931 in Atlantic City, NJ, Joe was the son of the late William Alfred Ross and the late Caroline Coleman Ross.

Joe proudly served our country during the Korean War as a Petty Officer Second Class in the United States Navy. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree he went on to work as a Mechanical Engineer, focusing on steam turbines for Westinghouse, at which time he earned his Master’s Degree at Drexel University.

Joe was an active member of St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church in Aston, Pa, and after moving to Chester County, he became a member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Unionville, Pa. Joe was a creative individual which was showcased in his poetry, counted cross stitch, bass guitar playing and love of singing in church choir or anytime a song would come to mind. He was nothing short of a pool shark and an avid golfer who achieved a hole in one. Joe’s wonderful sense of humor, sprinkled with a bit of teasing, always brought about a smile and brightened your day.

Joe was a compassionate, loving and thoughtful man. He continually put the needs of others above his own and was the first person to offer to help. Joe’s warmth and kindness will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Above all he loved his family unconditionally and wholeheartedly.

Joe is survived by his sister Carol Donbaugh Mrljack (Joseph) of Carlisle, Pa. and his six children, Joseph Ross, Jr. of Kennett Square, PA, Susan Evans (Robert) of Earleville, MD, Sandy DeWilde (John) of Morrisville, PA, John Glyshaw of Portland, OR, Karis Hollenbeck of Prospect Park, PA and Kathy Glyshaw (Kirk Nabors) of Columbia, MD; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren with one on the way.

  1. I’m so sorry to hear about Joe! I loved having him and Nancy come every summer until it got to be too much for them to come this far. Joe was always so helpful when he came always asking if I needed to have anything done while he was here. Before Stan passed away they were here in the summer of 1999. Joe asked Stan if there was anything he could do for him. Stan asked if he could get the cross that was at the corner where our son had died. He got the cross and brought it here and repaired it and fixed it all up. Joe wrote a poem about Stan and read it at his funeral. He fixed a railing at the top of my stairs that I was worried about. I always admired his cross stitch of which we have been graced to have. You couldn’t tell the front from the back he was that good. He sang with our choir several times when he was here. We enjoyed going with him to the nursing home when we came to visit. I’m sad for his family and myself, but I know where Joe is now. His trials of life are over, and I’m sure that Jesus welcomed him into His loving embrace when he entered Heaven.
